At just 12 years old Thandolwayo would walk seven kilometres each day, threatened by crocodiles, to collect contaminated water for her family. It looked like she would never realise her hope of finishing her education and becoming a nurse, until a Caritas Australia supported project created access to clean water helping Thandolwayo to stay at school and achieve a future full of hope.

On March 22, a massive fire swept through Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh, destroying thousands of refugee shelters, as well as health centres and other facilities. Caritas Bangladesh reports that nearly 6,000 shelters have been destroyed, leaving approximately 9,000 households without a place to live. Our local partner, Caritas Bangladesh, is working with local emergency services and assessing the damage that has been done to infrastructure and shelters so that we can respond as effectively as possible. Thousands of people have fled their homes in the Democratic Republic of Congo after Mount Nyiragongo erupted late on Saturday May 22.  The eruption has killed at least 15, and forced 30,000 people to flee from the city of Goma in the North Kivu province. At least 500 houses have been destroyed.  The full extent of the damage is not yet known, but it is expected that there will be widespread electricity and water shortages as people return to their homes.

More than 26 people have been killed and thousands of homes destroyed after Category Three Cyclone Tauktae hit the coast of Gujarat, India, late on May 17.  The cyclone made landfall on India’s west coast, leaving a trail of destruction as the country fights the worst outbreak of COVID-19 in the world.  Wind speeds surged as high as 185 kilometres an hour, the heavy rain and strong winds causing significant damage to major refineries, ports, villages, crops, cattle and roads.

However, human trafficking often happens to people who are vulnerable because of a lack of education and employment opportunities, social isolation, discrimination, or a lack of protection by adults or the state. On March 22, a massive fire swept through the Rohingya refugee camp in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, leaving approximately 45,000 people homeless. Our partner, Caritas Bangladesh, is providing ongoing support to assess the scope and impact of the disaster.  The fire also caused extensive damage to key essential facilities including hospitals, health centres, learning centres and women-friendly spaces. Our staff and partners are concerned about the long-term impacts of the fires, which destroyed health centres and other key infrastructure.
