Thank You

As we step into 2025, I would like to warmly welcome you to the new year and express my heartfelt gratitude for your unwavering support for communities in need around the world throughout the past year.

Despite the ongoing challenges that our world continues to face – political upheaval, conflict, famine, and the growing impacts of climate change – I am incredibly proud to say that our commitment to building a more just and hopeful future for all remains steadfast and stronger than ever. This is only possible because of the compassion of generous people like you.

Throughout the 2023-2024 financial year, we worked under the guiding principle of stewardship. This enabled us to work closely with our partners to ensure that every effort we made was grounded in integrity, transparency and an unrelenting dedication to those we serve.

Your generosity played a vital role in helping us make a profound impact. Together with our partners, your support helped vulnerable communities gain access to education, clean water and sanitation. It also helped provide many families with food security, reliable sources of income and healthcare services, empowering them to build sustainable livelihoods and brighter futures. For this and so much more, I am immensely grateful.

Your kindness and generosity positively impacted the lives of more than 1 million participants across 36 countries, and your support has helped us, and our partners respond to 30 global emergencies, directly assisting 542,181 people facing crises.

These extraordinary figures are a testament to the transformative power of your compassion and dedication, which are at the heart of everything that we do at Caritas Australia.

As 2025 commences, I feel a deep sense of hope and optimism, and I am inspired by the remarkable difference that your support has already made. I look forward to all the wonderful things we will continue to achieve together in the year ahead.

On behalf of everyone at Caritas Australia, thank you for your steadfast commitment to our mission. Together, we can continue to partner with the most vulnerable and marginalised communities to create a brighter future for all.

I hope you enjoy this edition of Together: Partnership in Action – a celebration of the incredible impact of your generosity.

With gratitude,

Interim Chief Executive Officer

Africa

Your generosity helped support communities across Africa through 15 development programs reaching 553,995 people like Memory from Malawi.

Thanks to your support she participated in the A+ Program, which helped her gain an education and graduate with an Advanced Certificate in Carpentry and Joinery.

Now, Memory works at one of the largest hydroelectric power companies in Malawi.

Pacific

Your generosity helped support 107,193 people across the Pacific region. This includes the Lemakot Health Centre in Papua New Guinea.

Rainwater seeped into treatment rooms through a leaky roof, jeopardising hygiene, safe electricity and water storage.

With your support, our local partners replaced the facility's roof. Now the centre can safely deliver healthcare.

Asia

Your generosity helped support communities across Asia through 28 development programs, reaching 1,027,716 people like Chiquito from Timor-Leste.

With your kindness and the work of our partner, Caritas Diocesana Maliana, he participated in sustainable agricultural training.

Now, by applying his new skills, his farm is thriving and his family has enough income to buy food

Australia

Your generosity helped support 401,530 people through 6 programs across Australia.

One such program is Grassroots Youth Engagement (GYE), led by our partner Grassroots Action Palmerston (GAP).

With your support, GYE provides Indigenous youth with employment pathways mentorship and emotional support to help heal intergenerational trauma and build better futures.

From hunger to hope: How your generosity helped Angeline transform her family's future

Angeline lives with her husband and three children in the Gokwe region in rural Zimbabwe. Working as a farmer, life was not easy for her and her family, as they often experienced food insecurity. To make matters worse, they had to walk nearly four kilometres to fetch water from an open well. This water was shared with wild animals, exposing them to the threat of waterborne diseases that loomed over their health and safety.

However, with your support, this all changed when Angeline took part in the Zimbabwe Integrated Community Development program, supported by Caritas Gokwe and delivered in partnership with the Australian Government through the Australian NGO Cooperation Program (ANCP).

The program empowers vulnerable families to fight hunger by helping improve the diversity of their food whilst boosting their income. The program particularly targets women and girls to ensure they can access clean and safe water.

Through the program, Angeline attended an Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) workshop that helped her and her community members identify strengths and resources they already had to create positive change in their lives.

I realised my potential to lead in my own development. I realised that, with the correct pivoting and support, our village could lead in its own development. I participated in the Conservation Agriculture training in the very first year and after receiving my maize seed package, my family realised a very good maize harvest from a very small piece of land.
Angelique

Since adopting the farming techniques acquired from the training, Angeline’s yields have flourished. She can grow a variety of vegetables including green pepper and carrots allowing her children to enjoy a healthier and more balanced diet. She can also sell excess vegetable produce to earn an income and use that money to pay for her two children’s school fees, creating a brighter future for her family.

Program achievements

830 people participated in conservation agriculture training.

Access to clean water and sanitation was improved for 7,700 people.

550 people participated in preventative and awareness-raising activities related to child protection.

Your impact across emergency responses

You supported our partners in conflict zones and disaster-prone areas during their darkest hours. Last year, your generosity helped reach 542,181 people through our emergency appeals, respond to 30 emergency crises across 24 countries, and support 17 partner organisations.

Gaza

The situation in Gaza continues to escalate. Since 7 October 2023, 44,383 Palestinians and 1,139 Israelis have lost their lives, 1.9 million people have been displaced and 2.2 million people are facing acute food insecurity.

Your generosity and the work of our partner Catholic Relief Services (CRS) have helped provide:

Over 937,000 people with food assistance through ready-to-eat food parcels.

Over 156,200 people with bedding, clothing, kitchen items, blankets and other essential supplies.

Over 123,000 people with emergency hygiene kits.

Lebanon

The Gaza conflict is spilling into Lebanon, fueling southern border clashes and worsening a humanitarian crisis. Air raids have displaced many to Mount Lebanon, straining a nation already facing economic hardships.

Amid the displacement, your generosity has been pivotal in helping our partners support:

10 primary healthcare centres and 8 mobile health clinics.

37 centres providing rent and cash assistance for bills and school fees.

Secondary healthcare support across 80 hospitals.

Sudan

Sudan faces an acute humanitarian crisis, with over 9 million displaced internally and across borders. Famine was declared in a Northern Darfur camp, and ongoing conflict has caused thousands of casualties and damaged vital infrastructure.

With your support, we have partnered with CAFOD, SOS Sahel, and ERRADA to assist:

Food distribution at 17 gathering points for internally displaced people.

Multi-purpose cash assistance.

Shelter for internally displaced people and refugees.

We are deeply grateful for your generosity and thank you for your unwavering commitment and support towards those we served throughout 2024.

As we step into 2025, we look forward to continuing our work together in becoming better stewards, and in fostering a fairer and more compassionate world for everyone.
