The campaign is particularly significant in the context of the Year of Jubilee – a time rooted in biblical tradition that calls for the forgiveness of debts and the restoration of justice. In the Book of Leviticus, the Year of Jubilee was a time to reset economic imbalances, free those enslaved by debt, and return land to its rightful owners. Today, this ancient principle resonates deeply as we confront modern-day debt problems. Caritas Australia’s campaign draws inspiration from this tradition, urging world leaders and financial institutions to prioritise human dignity over profits.  Â
Debt relief isn’t just an economic issue – it's a moral imperative. When countries are freed from the burden of unsustainable debt, they can invest in their people, build resilient communities, and foster hope for the future. Caritas Australia's campaign invites everyone to take part in this movement, whether through advocacy or raising awareness. Â

Debt is often seen as a financial issue, but for millions in developing countries, it’s a matter of dignity and survival. Unsustainable debt limits what countries can do to support people. Countries are forced to redirect critical funds from essential public services such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure towards loan repayments. From Samoa to Malawi, 54 countries are currently affected by unjust debt. This vicious cycle perpetuates poverty, inequality and suffering, trapping communities in a system that prioritises creditors over protecting human dignity.  Â
Caritas Australia has joined other Catholic and civil society organisations to tackle this crisis head-on with our Turn Debt Into Hope campaign. The initiative shines a light on the devastating impact of debt on vulnerable populations and advocates for systemic change. By calling for debt relief and fair financial systems, Turn Debt Into Hope aims to break the cycle of poverty and create opportunities for sustainable development.  Â

As we reflect on the Jubilee Year’s call for justice and mercy, let us remember that turning debt into hope is not just a financial solution – it's a step toward a more equitable and compassionate world. Â
Join Caritas Australia in this vital mission and help transform lives. We will be launching the campaign via webinar on 16 May, and there will be a petition calling for world leaders to fix the current debt crisis and prevent future problems. We invite you to attend the launch and get involved throughout the year. Â
