Poverty is also an ongoing issue, particularly in rural and remote islands where communities may have inadequate access to water, food security and health services.

Program snapshot: Improving Food Security and Sustainable Livelihoods in the Northern Division in Fiji 

  • The Northern Division of Fiji has been neglected for years because of its remoteness and has witnessed the highest poverty rate in the nation. Caritas Australia works with the Foundation for Rural Integrated Enterprises & Development (FRIEND) to support communities in the northern division that are impacted by climate change and health issues including high non-communicable disease and mortality rate.

  • The project will aim to improve business and financial literacy among community members, increase nutrition rates and food security and improve communities’ disaster preparedness and resilience through establishing an organic seedling bank.

  • Along with your generous support, this program is supported by the Australian Government, through the Australian NGO Cooperation Program (ANCP).

Families are more resilient to disasters and the impact of climate change.

Community members can boost their income through financial literacy training.

People are trained in organic farming practices.

Communities can install solar lights and set up seedling nurseries.
