Program Snapshot: Pacific

Caritas Australia works with a number of partners across the Pacific, including Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Samoa.

The Pacific region is home to some of Australia’s closest geographical neighbours.

We have seen in recent times the devasting impact that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on our Pacific neighbours. In Papua New Guinea, the pandemic overwhelmed an already fragile healthcare system, leaving many of the most vulnerable members of the community at risk.

With your support, our extensive church network in PNG has been able to reach people living in some of the most remote areas, providing them with face masks, hygiene kits and vital health care information.

The Pacific region is also prone to natural disasters, such as cyclones, tsunamis and even volcanic eruptions.

In the Solomon Islands, our Happy, Healthy and Holistic Program supports young people with Disaster Risk Reduction training so that they can be prepared during an emergency.

The program also supports young people like Shaniella to access clean water and learn skills to boost their employment prospects.

Shaniella grew up in a remote village in the Solomon Islands in a province which has limited educational and job opportunities.

With your support, Shaniella attended a rural training centre, supported by Caritas Australia, where she can participate in training in hospitality and tourism, which will greatly improve her job prospects.

Thank you for standing with our Pacific neighbours as they build a brighter future for themselves - and for future generations.
